Air Taxi‌ Stocks Soar on⁣ Executive Order

⁣Updated June 09, 2025
⁢ ‍

Shares of Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation Inc. experienced double-digit percentage gains Monday after an executive order signaled potential benefits for ‍the electric vertical takeoff and ⁢landing⁤ (eVTOL) ⁢aircraft ‌industry.‌ the move underscores growing ⁤interest in air taxi services and advanced aviation technologies.

Joby Aviation stock increased by 13.5% to approximately $9.25 per share, while Archer stock rose⁣ by about 12.8% ‍to $11.50 per share.

Both companies are developing ‌eVTOL ⁢aircraft for use in‌ future ‍air taxi services, with commercial launches anticipated within the next⁤ year in select markets. These companies also develop aircraft‍ for defense and othre specialized applications.

The catalyst for ⁤Monday’s surge was an executive order seeking to reestablish the United⁤ States as a‌ leader in high-speed aviation and empower innovators to develop ‍the next ‌generation of ‌air travel.

⁢ ⁤ ‌ “the United States‌ stands at the threshold of a bold new ⁣chapter in aerospace innovation. For more than 50‌ years, outdated and overly restrictive regulations have grounded the promise of⁢ supersonic⁤ flight over land, stifling American ingenuity, weakening our global competitiveness, and ceding leadership to foreign ⁢adversaries. Advances in aerospace engineering, materials science, and noise⁤ reduction now make ⁢supersonic flight not just possible, but ‌safe, sustainable, and commercially viable,” the order states.

Repeals Ban on Supersonic Flight

The executive⁣ order aims to repeal a 1973⁣ prohibition on overland supersonic flight⁤ and remove regulatory ‍barriers⁢ hindering the advancement of supersonic aviation technology. It also directs ⁤the Federal Aviation Governance to establish rules for acceptable‍ supersonic aircraft noise levels during ‌takeoff, landing, and operation.

furthermore,⁣ the order tasks the director⁤ of the⁢ Office of ⁤Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) ⁣with coordinating supersonic ⁤research and growth through the National Science and Technology Council. This effort ⁣seeks to identify⁣ research, development,⁣ testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) ‌needs for commercial viability, foster testing at federal ⁢sites, and share R&D results.

The Secretary of Transportation is also required to engage with international partners‍ to align regulatory approaches and secure safety agreements with ‌foreign aviation authorities.

Investors ‍view ‌this executive action as a positive development for Archer and Joby, anticipating increased research and development funding and reduced ⁤regulatory ⁤obstacles. While neither ‌company is currently profitable, they are closely watched as‌ they approach commercial operations.

What’s next

The aviation industry ⁣anticipates ⁣further regulatory developments and technological advancements spurred by⁤ the ⁤executive order, possibly accelerating the⁢ timeline for commercial‌ air taxi⁣ services and supersonic ‌flight.
