A recent case highlights the successful delivery of a kidney via unmanned aircraft and ongoing research explores innovative treatments for autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS).

Drone Delivery of Organs: A New Frontier in Transplantation

In April 2019, the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical Center achieved a landmark feat: the successful delivery of a donor kidney via unmanned aircraft. This April 26, 2019, breakthrough, detailed in a University of Maryland news release, involved a 2.8-mile, 9.52-minute flight. The collaboration included aviation and engineering experts from the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering and The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland, a non-profit organ procurement organization.

Dr. Joseph Scalea, Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the project leader, emphasized the collaborative nature of the achievement. “As a result of the outstanding collaboration among surgeons, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), engineers, organ procurement specialists, pilots, nurses and, the patient, we were able to make a pioneering breakthrough in transplantation,” he stated. Prior to this, Dr. Scalea’s team had already tested the drone system by transporting saline, blood tubes, and other materials between the launch site and the hospital helipad.

This development holds promise for expanding access to organ transplantation, particularly in situations where traditional transportation methods are hindered by distance or logistical challenges. While still in its early stages, the use of drones for organ delivery represents a significant step forward in the field of transplantation medicine.

Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (AHSCT) for Multiple Sclerosis

Alongside advancements in organ delivery, research continues to explore novel therapies for autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) is emerging as a potential treatment option for select MS patients. A narrative review published in 2023 in JAMA Neurology details the use of AHSCT for MS, including recent developments and emerging guidelines. A comprehensive literature review published in October 30, 2023, in Cureus underscores the potential of stem cell transplantation (SCT) as a therapeutic intervention for MS. The review amalgamates evidence from various sources, including randomized controlled trials.

AHSCT involves collecting a patient’s own hematopoietic stem cells, followed by high-dose chemotherapy to suppress the immune system, and then reinfusing the stem cells to “reset” the immune system. This process aims to halt the progression of MS by reducing the autoimmune attack on the central nervous system.

Recent Case: Mother Donates Kidney to Son with MS

The intersection of organ transplantation and MS was recently highlighted in a poignant case reported by the BBC on September 22, 2025. A mother living with MS donated a kidney to her teenage son, Anthony, who was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Nephronophthisis, leading to kidney failure. Anthony received the transplant at Birmingham Children’s Hospital six months after his mother’s kidney was removed at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Sarah, Anthony’s mother, described the decision to donate as “the most natural decision in the world.” She emphasized the thoroughness of the evaluation process, which provided reassurance that she could safely undergo the surgery. Anthony expressed his gratitude for his mother’s selfless act, noting that the transplant has significantly improved his quality of life, allowing him to exercise more and regain opportunities he had lost.

This case underscores the complex interplay between autoimmune diseases, organ failure, and the profound impact of familial support. The NHS recently revealed organ transplant waiting lists were increasing, highlighting the ongoing need for organ donors.
