AIRC Grants €763,000 for Cancer Research in Reggio Emilia
Reggio Emilia, Italy – AIRC Boosts Cancer Research with €763,000 Grant
In a significant move to bolster cancer research, the Fondazione AIRC has announced a generous €763,000 grant earmarked for the IRCCS of Reggio Emilia for the year 2025. Currently, seven esteemed projects are being funded, including four Investigator Grants each spanning five years.
Dr. Alessia Ciarrocchi is at the helm of a project focused on malignant pleural mesothelioma, while Professor Stefano Luminari is exploring lymphomas. Professor Antonino Neri’s work centres on multiple myeloma, and Dr. Valentina Sancisi is delving into lung cancer. Two projects headed by young researchers, Dr. Valentina Fragliasso, and Dr. Francesca Reggiani, are examining T-cell lymphomas and breast cancer, respectively. Additionally, a three-year postdoctoral research fellowship has been awarded to Dr. Emanuele Vitale for his work on thyroid cancers.
AIRC: A Pillar of Independent Cancer Research
This year, AIRC reaffirms its commitment by investing over €141 million in innovative, independent cancer research. This substantial fund will support 673 groundbreaking projects, 90 fellowships for young talents, and eight special programs, providing opportunities for nearly 5,400 medical professionals and researchers in around 100 institutions across the country. Their work will concentrate on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for cancer.
Half of Cancer Patients Can Now Expect to Survive
The progress made in cancer survival rates, thanks to prevention efforts, early detection, and advanced therapies, is a testament to the crucial role research plays in the fight against this formidable disease. According to data from cancer registries, the prevalence, or the number of people living after a cancer diagnosis, is consistently rising. Today, it is estimated that around half of those diagnosed could expect a life expectancy similar to that of those unaffected by the disease.
AIRC’s "Orange Health" Initiative
Mark your calendars for January 25th, when AIRC’s "Orange Health" campaign returns to public spaces across the country. This annual event aims to raise awareness about cancer research and the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to reduce cancer risk. Studies show that about 40% of new cancer cases could be avoided or better treated if modifiable risk factors were addressed, including not smoking, regular exercise, balanced diet, and regular screening.
Unfortunately, Italian health statistics reveal that 24% of adults smoke, 33% are overweight, and 10% are obese. Additionally, 18% consume alcohol in quantities that pose health risks, and sedentary behaviour has increased from approximately 23% in 2008 to 28% in 2023.
On this day, volunteers will distribute bags of red oranges (minimum donation €13), jars of Sicilian IGP red orange marmalade (minimum donation €8), and jars of orange blossom honey (minimum donation €10). Red oranges, rich in vitamin C, symbolize a healthy diet, with one orange providing over two-thirds of the recommended daily intake. So, what steps are you willing to take to support this crucial cause?
This significant investment by AIRC underscores its unwavering dedication to driving progress in the fight against cancer. By supporting diverse research initiatives, ranging from established investigators to promising young talent, AIRC fosters a dynamic and collaborative research environment. The projects funded in Reggio Emilia represent just a fraction of AIRCS wider impact, highlighting the organization’s crucial role in fueling innovative cancer research across Italy. Through continued investment in independent, cutting-edge research, AIRC remains a beacon of hope, paving the way towards improved treatments, earlier diagnoses, and ultimately, a future free from the burden of cancer.
This notable investment by AIRC underscores the critical role of autonomous research in advancing our understanding and combatting cancer. By fostering innovation and supporting talented researchers across Italy, AIRC is not only pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge but also offering hope to countless individuals facing this devastating disease. The increasing survival rates are a tangible testament to the power of research, demonstrating that with continued dedication and collaboration, we are moving closer to a future where cancer is no longer a death sentence. The journey is long, but AIRC’s unwavering commitment shines a beacon of light on the path towards a cancer-free tomorrow.
