Former Miss Universe Ireland Star Aims for the Mirrorball trophy While Balancing Law Studies
DUBLIN — Aishah Akorede, the 25-year-old model and beauty-pageant winner, is making waves on Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) with her infectious energy and determination. After a stellar debut last week, where she and her professional partner,Robert Rowiński, landed in third place on the leaderboard,Akorede is ready to step up her game.
“I feel more at ease now that we’ve done the first show,” Akorede told reporters ahead of this Sunday’s episode. “With the positive feedback and being third on the leaderboard, that does add a bit more pressure, so the nerves are probably stemming from there.”
The Leixlip native, who dazzled audiences with a fast and flowing Quickstep to Stargazing by Myles Smith in Week 1,is set to perform a salsa to Deep Down by Alok,Ella Eyre, and Kenny Dope feat. Never Dull. “I’m ready to turn it up a notch,” she said with a laugh.
From Pageants to the Dance Floor
Akorede, who won Miss Universe Ireland in 2021, is no stranger to the spotlight. However, she insists she’s not as competitive as people might assume. “I’ve always enjoyed the growth of the journey more than anything,” she said. “With these dances,we’re going to make so many mistakes, but we’re going to learn from them. That’s what I’m most excited for—but that doesn’t mean I’m not in it to win it.”
Her competitive spirit was evident after her strong Week 1 performance. “I do want to win it, and I feel like after the week I had last week, it has made me realy, really, really want this a lot more,” she admitted. “Honestly, the adrenaline is just so high, and I’m really excited.”
Balancing Law Studies and Dance Rehearsals
While Akorede is lighting up the dance floor, she’s also pursuing her second Master’s degree in law at the University of Law in England. “I do the classes online, usually in the studio on my breaks,” she shared.
Her dedication to education is matched by her financial savvy. In 2022, Akorede won the British reality series Beauty and the Geek, taking home a £50,000 (approximately $63,000) prize. “I haven’t spent any of it—well, some of it is indeed going towards the current degree I’m doing now—but apart from that, I haven’t touched it,” she said. “I’m saving because I’m very responsible most of the time.”
A Heartwarming Journey
Akorede credits her time on Beauty and the Geek with helping her overcome social anxiety. “The Geeks on the show taught me a lot about myself,” she reflected. “It was hard seeing how out of touch they were with social situations. I used to be somebody who suffered from social anxiety, but some of them have never held a girl’s hand or hugged them.Just being able to see them grow outside and behind-the-scenes was heartwarming.”
She remains close with her former castmates, who plan to cheer her on in person if she makes it to Week 4 of DWTS. “A lot of them are going to come and watch it live if I’m still in it,” she said.
