Updated June 09, 2025
Japan is intensifying efforts to reach a trade agreement with the United States, focusing on a review of U.S. tariff policy. Ryosei Akazawa, Japan’s top tariff negotiator, pledged to reporters Sunday to do everything possible before the anticipated meeting between prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Akazawa’s comments followed his return from Washington, D.C., where he concluded the fifth round of negotiations concerning the Trump management’s tariffs. The discussions occur as Ishiba and Trump may meet during the Group of Seven summit in Canada, scheduled to begin June 15.
Despite skepticism within the Japanese government about persuading the U.S. to fully withdraw its tariff measures, akazawa emphasized japan’s firm stance. He described the U.S.actions as regrettable, reiterating the call for a review of the tariff policy.
“The series of U.S.measures are regrettable. There is no change at all in our stance of urging the U.S. side to review its tariff measures,” Akazawa said.
The timing for the next round of Japan-U.S. trade talks remains uncertain, according to Akazawa.
What’s next
Akazawa will continue diplomatic efforts to schedule further discussions and work toward a mutually agreeable resolution on trade issues between Japan and the U.S.
