Akwaaba Hails FG’s Breakthrough: Visa Issues and Tourism Set to Soar
Nigerian Government Praised for Resolving Visa Issues for Foreign Delegations
The organizers of the Akwaba Africa Travel Market have commended the Nigerian government for its prompt resolution of visa issues for foreign delegations.
Host Ambassador Ikechi Uko expressed relief that the difficult issue of Nigerian visas had been resolved quickly. He explained that he had posted frustrations about visas for delegates from across Africa.
He complained that getting an online visa on arrival was very expensive and accused Nigerian embassies in East Africa of not issuing visas and forcing everyone to apply online.
He said several people shared his post with the tourism minister and called him to find out more details. He said after explaining the situation to her, the minister promised to involve her colleague, the home affairs minister.
“I am happy to say that the Minister of Home Affairs, Olubunmi Tunziozo, the Minister of Tourism, Lola Aidzon and the Director-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, have resolved the issue,” he said.
“My first delegates are now arriving and I am pleased that this resolution is not just for my event. The new measures will apply across the board to all African visitors to Nigeria.”
He said meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE) are more mandatory than optional leisure travel and he believes Nigeria would benefit more by supporting MICE.
However, he expressed disappointment at the government’s stance on Aqaba, West Africa’s largest travel trade show, and its lack of support for venues and host buyer programmes, and greatly appreciated the intervention of the Tourism Minister.
“The Nigerian government is reviewing visa procedures and new measures will be announced soon.
Most people who travel to Nigeria have complained about the expensive visa on arrival process. Nigerian embassies in some African countries do not have visa stickers.
