The death of Mohammed Wishah follows a series of strikes in August 2025 that targeted media workers and facilities in Gaza.

On August 11, 2025, an Israeli airstrike targeted a media tent sheltering journalists outside the main gate of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The attack killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameraman Ibrahim Zaher, and assistant Mohammed Noufal.
The Israel Defense Forces stated that the strike targeted Al-Sharif, claiming the correspondent was involved in rocket attacks against Israeli targets and headed a Hamas cell.
On August 25, 2025, a double-tap
attack on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis killed at least 21 people, including five journalists. Among those killed were Al Jazeera journalist Mohammad Salama, Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri, and freelance journalist Mariam Abu Daqqa, who was working for the Associated Press at the time. Ahmed Abu Aziz and Moaz Abu Taha were also killed in the strike.
Broader Impact on Journalism in Gaza
The conflict has resulted in numerous casualties among media professionals. On April 16, 2025, photojournalist Fatima Hassouna was killed by an Israeli missile along with ten members of her family.
