Al-Nassr advanced in the 2026 AFC Champions League 2 with a 1-0 victory over Arkadag of Turkmenistan, a result described as deserved and expected by Saudi sports analyst Mohammed Shnawan Al-Anzi.

Al-Anzi, speaking on social media platform X, stated the win was “deserved and the qualification was expected.” He further commented that Al-Nassr is “steadily and confidently heading towards the Asian title, adding a new achievement for Saudi football.”

The victory comes at a pivotal moment for Al-Nassr and its star player, Cristiano Ronaldo. While the team is progressing in the continental competition, their domestic form has been inconsistent. A recent 2-1 defeat to Al-Orubah on February 13th saw them slip to fourth place in the Saudi Pro League, increasing the pressure on coach Stefano Pioli. The team now trails league-leading Al-Hilal by a single point, according to reports from February 6th.

Ronaldo’s presence in Saudi Arabia has undoubtedly raised the profile of the Pro League and the AFC Champions League. However, his pursuit of a major trophy with Al-Nassr continues. He has yet to secure silverware since joining the Riyadh club in December 2022, with the Arab Club Champions Cup being his only title to date. The AFC Champions League represents a significant opportunity to change that.

Al-Nassr’s path to the Asian title is not without challenges. The competition is increasingly competitive, with other Saudi Arabian clubs also vying for the crown. Al-Hilal, in particular, is considered a strong favorite, having won a record four continental titles and currently dominating the domestic league. They are led by a squad featuring players like Joao Cancelo, Ruben Neves, and a host of Brazilian stars, including Marcos Leonardo, Kaio Cesar, and Malcom.

The broader context of Saudi Arabian football is one of significant investment and ambition. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) controls both Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, as well as Newcastle United in the English Premier League. This financial backing has attracted high-profile players like Ronaldo and, previously, Karim Benzema, signaling a clear intent to elevate the standard of football in the country.

However, this investment has also reportedly created internal tensions. Reports from February 2nd suggest Ronaldo has expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s management, particularly regarding the pursuit of Benzema by Al-Hilal. A source familiar with the situation at Al-Nassr indicated that Ronaldo is “just competitive and doesn’t like other clubs getting stronger.” He was reportedly left out of the squad for a Saudi Pro League game against Al-Riyadh, with sources stating he was “refusing to play.”

Despite these reported issues, Ronaldo has been a prolific goalscorer for Al-Nassr, netting 35 goals in the 2023-24 Saudi Pro League season and 25 in the 2024-25 season, earning him the league’s top scorer award in both campaigns. He also demonstrated his Asian Champions League form by scoring six goals in the group stage, helping Al-Nassr advance to the Round of 16.

Al-Nassr’s upcoming match against Esteghlal of Tehran in the two-legged Round of 16 tie will be a crucial test of their credentials. A victory would secure a place in the last eight and bring them one step closer to the elusive Asian Champions League title. The pressure is on Ronaldo and Pioli to deliver, both in terms of results and in managing the internal dynamics within the club.

The assistant coach of Al-Zawraa predicts Al-Nassr will “easily win” the AFC Champions League title, a sentiment that reflects the expectation surrounding the Saudi club. However, as the competition intensifies and the stakes rise, Al-Nassr will need to overcome both on-field challenges and off-field distractions to achieve their ambitious goals. The team’s ability to navigate these complexities will ultimately determine their success in the Asian Champions League and beyond.

The Saudi Pro League is undergoing a transformation, and Al-Nassr, with Ronaldo at the helm, is at the forefront of that change. Whether they can translate their investment and talent into tangible success remains to be seen, but their journey in the AFC Champions League will undoubtedly be closely watched by football fans around the world.
