Pacino’s Passion: Modigliani Film Finally Coming to Life

After a 30-year struggle, Al Pacino’s dream of bringing the story of Amedeo Modigliani to the screen is finally becoming a reality.The film, titled ”Modigliani – Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” is directed by Johnny Depp and slated for release in July. Pacino, known for his role in “The godfather,” has long been captivated by the artist’s life.
The film delves into the life of the Italian painter-sculptor,who faced poverty and addiction while struggling to gain recognition. Modigliani died at 35 from tubercular meningitis. Today, his works command high prices; his “Reclining Nude” sold for $170 million in 2015.
Set in war-torn Paris in 1916, the film captures 72 hours in Modigliani’s bohemian existence as he seeks fame and fortune. Riccardo Scamarcio plays Modigliani.Depp said Scamarcio reminded him of actors Oliver Reed and marcello mastroianni.
Pacino recalled previous attempts with Martin Scorsese to develop the Modigliani film, with Depp initially slated to play the artist. The current production is a collaboration with producer barry navidi.
Jerzy Kromolowski and mary Olson-Kromolowski adapted the script from a play by Dennis McIntyre,who Pacino said had a “great love of Modigliani.”
Pacino said the story of Modigliani resonates universally. “There is something in this story that is not just identifiable with [the] artist. There is that connection to rejection in all of us,so it gives audiences something thay can relate to,” Pacino said.
“It’s an art film, which is always difficult to get off the ground. However, it’s about an artist and those films have been sought after. There have certainly been some great films about artists over the years.”
