According to IstoÉ, the Sept. 16 holiday is not observed nationwide but is restricted to Alagoas, where it marks 209 years since the territory achieved administrative separation from Pernambuco in 1817. The political emancipation was ordered during the reign of Dom João VI amid the disruptions of the Pernambucan Revolution. Today, the holiday applies across all 102 municipalities in the state, including the capital city of Maceió, altering standard business and administrative routines.
Banking and Public Administration Closures
Administrative offices across state and municipal governments will suspend operations on Wednesday, with normal schedules resuming on Thursday, Sept. 17, as reported by O Alagoano. Banking institutions will keep physical branches closed throughout the state for in-person service, though digital channels, automated teller machines, and mobile apps remain operational for financial transactions.
Social assistance units managed by the Secretariat of Municipal Social Development (Semdes)—including CRAS, CREAS, the single registry office in Benedito Bentes, and popular restaurants—will stay closed on the holiday, according to O Alagoano. Similarly, the Court of Justice of Alagoas (TJAL) will operate under an exclusive emergency on-call schedule, while the Public Defender’s Office (DPAL) will maintain an on-call team for urgent civil and criminal matters at its Gruta de Lourdes sub-headquarters from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.30.
Commercial Hours and Public Transport in Maceió
