Alan Ritchson’s journey into the role of Jack Reacher wasn’t seamless. The actor faced numerous challenges, including the weight of fan expectations, during the initial season of the Amazon Prime Video series.
Ritchson discussed his early experiences on “Reacher” with the Television Academy in December 2023. He said he was constantly reminded of the fans’ deep connection to the character as filming began. This awareness translated into a unique on-set dynamic.
According to Ritchson, during the first half of season 1, about 15 people offered different opinions on how to play Reacher. He said he was asked to perform scenes multiple times, each with a different interpretation, to satisfy everyone’s vision of the character.
Despite these challenges, the series became a hit,and Ritchson established himself as the definitive on-screen Jack Reacher for many viewers. This achievement is notably notable considering the conditions under which he worked.
Before landing the role of Jack Reacher, Ritchson had already spent nearly two decades in Hollywood. He experienced setbacks, including losing the lead in a proposed “Aquaman” spin-off after playing Arthur Curry on “Smallville.”
Ritchson said the “kind of tinkering” that occurred during “Reacher” season 1 was unlike anything he’d previously encountered. Though, he found the collaborative approach “fun,” viewing it as a constant reminder of the pressure to bring everyone’s version of Reacher to life.
He noted that season 2 was “much more relaxed,” likely because he had proven his ability to portray a version of Jack Reacher that resonated with audiences. Season 1 of “Reacher” broke Prime Video records by topping the Nielsen streaming charts.
Ritchson emphasized the importance of his own interpretation of the character, drawing from the source material while blocking out external pressures. He said his job is to bring to life what he sees as an authentic portrayal of Reacher.
“For probably the first half of the first season, there were maybe 15 people on set every day. And each wanted me to do it a different way. Like, ’Do a take that’s really funny,’ or someone else woudl think Reacher should be real menacing. So, I would have to do everything like 25 times, with wholly different reads, because everybody had their version of Reacher in their minds.'”
“Luckily for me, I had a huge amount of source material to absorb, which meant that there was also my version of Reacher. I’m open and available to my team’s ideas, but my job is to block out the pressure and the expectations of the 200 million fans that have read the books, and just bring to life what I see as an authentic representation.”
What’s next
With Alan Ritchson firmly established as Jack Reacher, future seasons promise a more streamlined production process, allowing him to further develop his authentic portrayal of the character.
