Public health authorities are raising alarms over a growing spread of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea in Sweden, according to risk assessments released by European and national health agencies. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has designated Sweden as a country experiencing a particularly concerning rise in treatment-resistant strains of the bacterial infection.

Rising Case Numbers and Domestic Transmission Chains

Historically, antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea cases in Sweden appeared only sporadically and were predominantly contracted outside the country’s borders. Microbiologist Thomas Åkerlund at the Public Health Agency of Sweden (Folkhälsomyndigheten) noted a shift in these epidemiological patterns.

Historiskt har vi bara haft enstaka fall här och då har man oftast smittats i andra länder. Nu ser vi betydligt fler resistenta bakterier, Åkerlund told Dagens Nyheter and Skånska Dagbladet.

During the previous year, Sweden recorded nine cases of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea. Four cases have already been detected so far this year, marking a sharp increase compared to historical maximums of roughly three cases per year. Furthermore, health officials point out that a significant proportion of those recently infected contracted the bacteria domestically rather than while traveling abroad. According to the Public Health Agency, this trend indicates that localized transmission chains have successfully established themselves within the country.

Antibiotic Resistance and Treatment Implications

The identified resistant strains have developed a strong defense primarily against ceftriaxon, which currently serves as the frontline antibiotic choice for treating gonorrhea infections. In addition to ceftriaxon resistance, the bacteria have demonstrated partial resistance to azithromycin, another key antibiotic utilized in treatment regimens.

Det betyder att antalet misslyckade behandlingar där man inte blir av med sjukdomen kan bli fler, Åkerlund stated to Dagens Nyheter, warning that patients face a higher risk of persistent infections due to treatment failures.

Despite the resistance against primary drugs, patients diagnosed with these resistant strains can still receive alternative therapy using older types of antibiotics. Public health experts are also eyeing upcoming pharmaceutical options, such as zoliflodacin, a new class of antibiotic that has demonstrated clinical efficacy in trials. However, European regulators have not yet approved zoliflodacin for use within the European Union.

Public Health Response and Monitoring

The Public Health Agency of Sweden currently maintains a dedicated surveillance program designed specifically to monitor treatment-resistant gonorrhea bacteria across the population. While health authorities view the domestic spread as a serious public health concern, the agency does not plan to implement additional extraordinary measures at this stage beyond ongoing tracking and monitoring protocols.
