Grupo Baskonia-Alaves’ Cross-Sport Sponsorship Strategy

Updated June 1,2025

Vitoria-Gasteiz,capital of the Basque Country, has a rich sporting ⁢history.‍ Grupo ⁢Baskonia-Alaves⁢ seeks⁢ a competitive edge by linking ⁤its soccer ‍and basketball operations. Only Real Madrid and ⁤Barcelona rival their dual presence in LaLiga and Liga ACB.

Despite having smaller budgets in EuroLeague and LaLiga, respectively, Saski Baskonia and alaves gain sponsorship opportunities⁣ by being connected. Potential partners receive tailored visibility solutions across the group’s sports hub, which includes NK Istra in Croatia, according to Abanda.

Abanda said Baskonia’s ‍EuroLeague status attracts certain brands, while Alaves’ matches against ⁤Barcelona ⁣and Real Madrid generate international interest. The group aims to leverage⁢ these combined assets for long-term sponsorship opportunities.

Sponsorships reflect this collaboration. Saski baskonia and Alaves⁤ share local institutional sponsors, such as the regional Alaves government and the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz. They also share ⁣commercial partners like PodoActiva, Adesso,‍ IMQ, and Halcon Viajes. Hyundai sponsors Saski Baskonia and⁣ NK Istra, while the Istra regional‍ body sponsors NK Istra and Alaves.

LaLiga provides Alaves with greater international exposure than Liga ACB or EuroLeague offers Baskonia. Soccer also generates more‍ revenue, especially as Saski Baskonia seeks a title sponsor.

The clubs’ distinct fan bases create complete coverage for joint sponsors. Deportivo Alaves has about 17,000 season ticket holders, while Saski Baskonia has around 10,000. few fans are members of both clubs or watch both EuroLeague and LaLiga games, Abanda noted.

Abanda said the combined resources and possibilities offer companies a valuable platform to achieve ⁤diverse targets ⁢through cross-team collaboration and strategic sponsorship.

Ondare (Legacy)

After focusing⁢ on developing Deportivo Alaves and expanding‍ internationally, Grupo Baskonia-Alaves is now focused on “ondare,” Basque for ‍”legacy.” This infrastructure initiative includes the Ibaia Sports City and international academy, Deportivo Alaves’ Mendizorrotza Stadium, and the ⁤Ondare center, which houses the European University Gasteiz,⁤ where Grupo Baskonia-Alaves is a shareholder.

Deportivo Alaves President⁢ Alfonso Fernández de Trocóniz said the Ondare project should generate a meaningful percentage of⁤ revenues within⁤ five years, ⁤reducing reliance on TV rights, ⁤which currently make up 75% of the club’s budget. This ⁢insulates ⁢the club from potential relegation from LaLiga and the subsequent loss ⁤of TV revenue.

The Buesa Arena, Bakh leisure center, ondare residences, and The Faktory business development center are also part of ⁢this ⁢initiative.

Vázquez said ⁢the goal is⁢ to diversify⁢ resources beyond LaLiga‍ competition to ensure stability. He noted that the region’s small population limits stadium ⁣size, necessitating new‍ businesses to compete with larger ⁣teams and reach a €100 million revenue level.

The club is considering TV revenue, player trading, sponsorships, commercial management, and non-sports businesses to⁤ gain a competitive advantage. These projects⁢ aim to enhance Vitoria-Gasteiz’s prosperity, mirroring⁣ how LaLiga’s⁣ international growth benefits Alaves.

Despite a €71⁣ million investment, Grupo Baskonia-Alaves is betting on the Ondare project ⁢to secure the future⁤ of Deportivo⁤ Alaves and Saski baskonia.

What’s next

Grupo Baskonia-Alaves will continue to ⁣develop the⁢ Ondare project, seeking to diversify its revenue streams and solidify its presence in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The group aims to create a lasting legacy that benefits both ⁣its sports teams and the community.
