Albany, Georgia – The Albany Museum of Art January 21, 2026, announced it has received a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to fund a public mural project celebrating the legacies of iconic American musicians. The project is part of the NEA’s “Celebrating America 250” initiative, commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

The mural will honor four musical giants: Ray Charles, a native of Albany; Billie Holiday; Duke Ellington; and Aretha Franklin. The artwork is intended to be installed in downtown Albany, serving as both a cultural landmark and a tribute to the city’s rich musical heritage.

The NEA’s “Celebrating America 250” program aims to support projects that recognize individuals who have significantly contributed to American history and culture. Ray Charles, born in Albany in September 23, 1930, overcame significant adversity to become a pioneering figure in soul music, blending gospel, blues, and jazz. Billie Holiday, renowned for her emotive vocals and poignant interpretations of jazz standards, remains a central figure in the history of American song. Duke Ellington, a prolific composer, pianist, and bandleader, elevated jazz to a sophisticated art form, and Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” became a symbol of Black empowerment and a voice for social change.
