The average combined state and local sales tax is 7.62%. Groceries and prescription drugs are mostly exempt. New Mexico has a progressive income tax, with a top rate of 5.9%.
New Mexico taxes pension benefits and retirement account distributions as income, but offers exemptions for those over 65 who meet income requirements. The maximum exemption is $8,000 for single taxpayers with incomes up to $18,000, and for married couples filing jointly with incomes up to $30,000. The exemption decreases until it disappears at $28,501 for singles and $51,001 for joint filers.
Social Security benefits are taxed only at higher income levels: those earning less than $100,000 (single) or $150,000 (jointly) are exempt. New mexico does not have estate or inheritance taxes.
