Alcampo, the French hypermarket chain, is significantly expanding its commitment to renewable energy across its Spanish locations, partnering with Helexia to install solar power systems at fourteen of its centers. The ongoing collaboration aims to increase self-consumption of electricity and reduce emissions, marking a substantial investment in sustainable operations.
The most recent and largest installation, completed on , is located at the Alcampo Telde hypermarket in the Canary Islands. This plant boasts a peak power capacity of 1.474 kilowatts (kWp) utilizing 2,436 high-efficiency photovoltaic modules. Alcampo anticipates the Telde installation will generate approximately 2,347 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy annually, covering 38% of the hypermarket’s total electricity needs.
Beyond the Canary Islands, Alcampo has been actively deploying solar infrastructure across mainland Spain. A new photovoltaic system has been integrated into the Alcampo Moratalaz hypermarket in the Community of Madrid, with a capacity of 650.1 kWp spread across 1,182 modules. This system is projected to produce 594 MWh of electricity per year, satisfying over 10% of the establishment’s energy consumption.
In southern Spain, a 621.5 kWp installation, comprising 1,100 panels, is expected to generate 922 MWh annually, covering around 20% of the center’s energy demand. Catalonia is also seeing significant investment, with two projects underway. At Alcampo Reus, a 156 kWp plant with 276 modules is estimated to produce 198 MWh per year, meeting approximately 25% of the center’s energy needs. In Vilanova i la Geltrú, a system installed on parking canopies features over 431 kWp of power and 784 solar panels, capable of generating 620 MWh of clean energy annually and supplying roughly 31% of the hypermarket’s electricity.
Further inland, the Alcampo Huesca hypermarket in Aragon now incorporates a 321 kWp installation consisting of 568 solar panels, projected to generate 476 MWh of renewable energy each year, covering 37% of the center’s electricity consumption. Finally, in Castilla y León, the Alcampo Ávila installation, integrated into parking canopies, features 520 photovoltaic modules with a capacity of 294 kWp, expected to produce 384 MWh annually, fulfilling 30% of the center’s energy requirements.
Alcampo’s commitment extends beyond these individual installations. The company states that since , 100% of the electricity used across its operations has been sourced from renewable sources, backed by a guarantee of origin certification. Alcampo has been publicly reporting its carbon footprint since 2010, with verification through ISO 14064 certification and the data is available on the company’s official website.
The partnership with Helexia is central to this strategy. Etienne Le Pargneux, CEO of Helexia España, emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, stating, “For Helexia, accompanying Alcampo on its energy roadmap means advancing a shared project that is already generating tangible results: more self-consumption capacity, fewer emissions and a network of centers that are increasingly efficient. We will continue to drive solutions that allow our customers to reduce their energy dependence and move towards a more sustainable future.”
Patricia Castellote, Director of Maintenance and Energy at Alcampo, echoed this sentiment, stating that the push for self-consumption, “aligned with our vision: ‘Eating well and Living better, taking care of the Planet,’ reflects Alcampo’s desire to progressively move towards a more responsible energy model. This journey is integrated into a roadmap that seeks to transform the way we operate in the territory, adding projects that reinforce this vision across the network.”
Currently, Alcampo operates a total of 14 solar installations across its Spanish centers, encompassing 14,726 solar modules. The company operates 507 hypermarkets and supermarkets in total – 80 hypermarkets and 427 supermarkets (133 franchised). It also manages 52 gas stations and an online commerce service, employing a workforce of 22,900 people.
Alcampo has outlined a decarbonization plan aiming to reduce emissions by 46% in Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030, and a 25% reduction in indirect emissions from logistics and product commercialization (Scope 3) by the same year. Helexia, founded in 2010 and a subsidiary of Voltalia, specializes in building energy performance and on-site solar power generation, having completed 1,800 photovoltaic projects globally with a team of nearly 500 employees across nine countries.
