Teh company claims its new batteries offer up ⁤to 450 miles of ​range on a single charge,⁢ a substantial increase over current lithium-ion batteries, and are considerably safer.

Factorial Energy, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, has been developing solid-state batteries for over a decade.Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries which use ⁢a liquid electrolyte, solid-state⁤ batteries ⁤utilize a solid electrolyte. This ‌eliminates the risk of flammable liquid leaks, a major ⁣safety concern with current EV ⁣batteries. The new technology also allows for higher energy density, ⁤meaning more power can be packed into the same space.

Mercedes-benz, Stellantis, and Hyundai are among those investing in and testing the batteries.Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to begin incorporating Factorial’s batteries into a limited production run of electric vehicles as early as 2027.

“This is a pivotal moment for the electric vehicle industry,” said Dr. Soon-ho Kim, Factorial Energy’s Chief Technology ‌Officer. “Solid-state batteries represent the next generation‌ of energy storage, and we’re confident our technology will accelerate the adoption of EVs.”

However, challenges remain. Scaling up production of solid-state batteries to meet mass-market demand is a complex and expensive undertaking. Factorial Energy‍ is currently building a large-scale manufacturing facility in massachusetts, with plans to begin commercial⁤ production in 2028. Cost is also a factor; solid-state batteries are currently more expensive to produce than lithium-ion batteries, though prices ⁤are expected to fall as production increases.

Experts believe that widespread adoption‍ of solid-state batteries could fundamentally change the EV landscape.
