The professional wrestling industry is currently facing a period of significant uncertainty regarding the future of Aleister Black, as contradictory reports emerge about a potential return to All Elite Wrestling (AEW).
Following a wave of post-WrestleMania releases carried out by WWE, Black became one of the most prominent free agents available on the market, sparking widespread speculation about his next destination.
The situation has become complicated by conflicting accounts from multiple reporting outlets regarding whether the wrestler is in active discussions with his former employer.
Initial reports from WrestleVotes Radio suggested that AEW did not expect Black to return to the promotion in the near future, despite his previous tenure as the leader of the House of Black faction.
However, this narrative shifted on May 6, 2026, when SEScoops reported that Black was engaged in active negotiations with AEW.
According to SEScoops, these discussions were taking place behind the scenes, regardless of how the situation was being presented publicly.
Regarding the status of these talks, SEScoops stated:
According to a source with direct knowledge of the discussions, those conversations are happening regardless of the public framing. Terms have not been finalized and no agreement is in place.
SEScoops
This claim was quickly contested by other sources. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported that AEW explicitly denied the existence of any current negotiations with the wrestler.
Fightful noted that when approached for comment, AEW has denied to Fightful that they are currently in negotiations with Malakai Black.
The disparity between the reports from SEScoops and Fightful has left the current status of Black’s career in a state of flux, with one source claiming active talks and the other reporting a firm denial from the promotion.
Black has a documented history with AEW, having worked for the company from 2021 until 2025 before his departure to return to WWE.
Adding to the complexity of a potential return is the existence of a 90-day noncompete clause following his WWE release.
Fightful indicated that significant time remains before this clause expires, which could influence the timing of any future discussions, even if active negotiations are currently denied.
While AEW has pushed back against the idea of active talks, Fightful also reiterated that the relationship between Black and the promotion may not be completely damaged.
Despite this, several factors have complicated the prospect of his return to the AEW locker room.
Unconfirmed rumors that circulated during Black’s previous run with the company suggested that he had resisted losing certain matches.
reports indicate that at least two AEW personalities have expressed opposition to his return.
MJF was specifically identified as one of the individuals who previously made comments suggesting he would not welcome Black back into the locker room.
As of May 8, 2026, the wrestling community remains divided on the likelihood of a reunion between Black and AEW, pending further official confirmation or the expiration of his contractual obligations to WWE.
