Alejandra Mizala and Francisco Martínez Advance to Second Round in University of Chile Rector Elections

Professors Alejandra Mizala and Francisco Martínez have advanced to the second round of the election for the rector of the Universidad de Chile for the 2026-2030 term. The results were announced following elections held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
Both candidates are full professors at the university’s Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. According to official results, Alejandra Mizala obtained 42.72% of the preferences, while Francisco Martínez received 23.02%.
The electoral process saw a participation rate of 72% of the total electoral roll.
The counting of votes took place during an event held in the Salón de Honor, where the virtual ballot box was opened. The proceedings were overseen by the Central Electoral Board, led by Pro-rector Claudio Pastenes.
During the event, Claudio Pastenes thanked the university community for the deliberative nature of the process.

The technical procedure for opening the virtual ballot box was explained by Professor Alejandro Hevia, a member of the UParticipa team. To facilitate voting, the VTI and UParticipa teams provided computers for those who chose to cast their ballots at Casa Central.
A total of four candidates participated in the initial stage of the election. The event was attended by the academic community and broadcast via the Universidad de Chile’s YouTube channel.
The second round of the election process is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
