Alek Alexiev’s Insights on Trump’s European Policy on His 83rd Birthday
Alex Alexiev: Predictions on Trump’s Policy Towards Europe
Today marks the 83rd birthday of Alex Alexiev. To honor him, let’s reflect on his insights about Donald Trump‘s policies towards Europe, which may still hold relevance for Trump’s potential second term.
In an interview published in January 2019, Alex stated that Trump had no connections with Russia, a point later proven by investigations. He argued that Trump would deliver significant impacts to Russia, highlighting the sanctions imposed on the country.
In a January 2017 interview, he noted that Trump’s key appointees, such as General Mattis at the Pentagon and Mike Pompeo at the CIA, were all opponents of Russia. He described these individuals as knowledgeable experts in their fields.
Alex strongly agreed with Trump’s stance that Europe should contribute more to its own defense. He pointed out that Europe ceased to invest adequately in its defense after the Soviet Union’s collapse. Alex criticized Germany for allocating only 1.2% of its GDP to defense, while the U.S. covers 75% of NATO’s expenses despite being comparably wealthier.
In a June 2018 comment on the blog “American Thinker,” Alex warned that if the EU continued to rely heavily on U.S. taxpayers for its security, Trump might consider withdrawing America from NATO. Instead, he might pursue collaboration with the “Bucharest Nine” (B-9), which includes Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. These countries form NATO’s eastern flank and are strategically close to Russia, Ukraine, and the Middle East.
Only time will tell if Alex Alexiev’s predictions about Trump’s policy towards the EU in his second term come true.
