Syrian security authorities have categorically denied reports circulating on social media alleging that public security personnel in the city of Al-bab, located in the Aleppo countryside, assaulted a popular singer. The statement comes in response to widespread claims that have been attributed to various interaction sites and Facebook pages.
Security Forces Address “Systematic Disinformation Campaigns“
A spokesperson for the security authority stated, “We categorically deny what is circulating on communication sites about a popular singer being assaulted by the public security personnel in the city of Al-Bab in Aleppo countryside, and no security authority has to do with the mentioned incident.”
The spokesperson further elaborated on the challenges faced by the association, noting, “We face many systematic disinformation campaigns that aim to distort the picture of General Security. we practice our work transparently, and if there is a mistake, we apologize and hold accountable, but we will not be silent about lies and fabricated charges.” This highlights a commitment to accountability while also pushing back against what they describe as purposeful misinformation.
Unpacking the Allegations and Counter-Narratives
Information that spread across several Facebook pages suggested a variety of reasons for the alleged incident. Some claims linked the event to “charitable support for the former president’s regime,” referring to Bashar al-Assad. Conversely, other accounts indicated that the incident stemmed from the singer’s refusal to perform songs that did not align with the perpetrators’ beliefs.
Visual evidence, in the form of video clips, purportedly showed a group of individuals shaving the hair of a person described as having a “charitable face.” The clips also reportedly captured the group directing insulting phrases at the individual and forcing him to repeat expressions in support of the transitional authority.
Activists on the ground reported that the alleged incident occurred during a wedding ceremony.According to their accounts, a group of young men interrupted the festivities, apprehended the singer, and subsequently assaulted him.
