"Alertes" Takes a Darker Turn, Captivating Audiences with Complex Intrigues

For the past year, Alertes has been gripping viewers with a more intense, shadowy tone. The series, which airs Mondays at 9 p.m., has evolved into a darker, more intricate drama, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats with chilling cases like this fall’s The Vulture.

The show, a spinoff of the 2019 miniseries Alerte Amber, has grown in depth and complexity. Alongside Sorcières and Les armes, Alertes completes a trio of TVA dramas that have shifted away from traditional narratives of twisted or broken families, offering instead a fresh, contemporary take on storytelling.

This evolution stems from the addition of new writers to the team: Guillaume Corbeil, Patrick Dupuis, and Sarah Lévesque, who have overseen the scripts since Season 4. Their creative fingerprints are evident in bold choices, such as the use of ballet dancers as a plot device and the shocking murder of Captain Roméo Goulet, portrayed by Jean-Michel Anctil.

“We inherited a well-oiled machine with a loyal audience,” says Corbeil, a playwright best known for Cinq visages pour Camille Brunelle.

“We’re aiming for a tone closer to the heavy-hitting series we love,” adds Dupuis, who has worked on shows like Pour toujours, plus un jour and Bon matin Chuck. “We’re pushing the boundaries of the soap opera format as far as we can without breaking it.”

The writers cite The Killing, True Detective, and Mare of Easttown as key influences. However, Alertes operates on a fraction of the budget of shows like True Detective: Night Country, which cost $10 million per episode. By comparison, a typical Quebec drama costs around $500,000 per hour to produce.

“When we say creators here perform miracles with limited resources, Alertes is a prime example,” Dupuis notes.

The show’s current storyline delves into the tense final days of a tightly contested election, where a Quebec solidaire-like party is poised to win its first election. However, the party’s co-leader, Aurélie Trépanier (Catherine Renaud), mysteriously disappears just weeks before the vote. The Cerberus Squad of the Sûreté du Québec uncovers a web of secrets surrounding her seemingly perfect family, including an open relationship with her husband, Léonard (Guillaume Baillargeon), and a tumultuous affair with a nonbinary activist named Fray (Marianne Verville).

Meanwhile, the series introduces a mysterious private club where wealthy men, clad in animal masks reminiscent of Squid Game, engage in cruel and sadistic games. Viewers are left to speculate whether Trépanier has become their latest pawn.

The show also explores the fallout from the brutal stabbing of Captain Goulet by Gabriel Gomez (Luis Oliva). The incident has deeply affected Frédéric Lamontagne (Benoît McGinnis), the awkward, workaholic police director, who keeps Goulet’s spinning top as a memento. While fans speculate about Lamontagne’s feelings for Goulet, the writers clarify that the character is more asexual than gay.

The writers regularly engage with fans on the show’s Facebook page, drawing inspiration from viewer feedback. “Our community is very engaged. It’s like direct audience feedback, akin to live theater,” says Corbeil.

Unlike shows like STAT or Indéfendable, Alertes avoids targeting its core characters. Captain Stéphanie Duquette (Sophie Prégent), the mother figure of the Cerberus Squad, narrowly cheated death in the spring but has since struggled with opioid addiction.

“We can add or remove characters around the core, but we can’t kill anyone at the center,” Dupuis confirms, a reassurance to fans of detectives Pelletier (Danny Gilmore), Magloire (Frédéric Pierre), and Bernard (Mylène St-Sauveur).

As Alertes continues to push boundaries, it remains a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of Quebec’s television industry, delivering gripping narratives that keep audiences hooked week after week.
