Filipina tennis star Alex Eala captured a bronze medal in the women’s singles tournament at the Asian Games on October 2, 2026, at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya, Japan.
Semifinal Defeat and Medal Finish in Nagoya
Eala entered the tournament as the top seed in women’s singles. Her run concluded in the semifinals against Wang Xinyu, who went on to defeat compatriot Zhang Shuai to secure the gold medal on October 2, 2026. Eala notably skipped the prestigious China Open in Beijing to compete for her country at the Asiad. Despite missing out on the gold medal match, she expressed satisfaction with her performance and stated that she left everything on the court during her run.
Managing the Weight of National Expectation
As a trailblazer for tennis in the Philippines who recently became the first player from the country to win a title on the women’s WTA Tour in August 2026, Eala faces intense fan attention wherever she competes.
Occasionally I do feel overwhelmed, but I recognize what an incredible honor it is to hold my current status and fulfill the childhood ambitions I always cherished. Therefore, I have come to accept that this is part of the occupation and simply how things operate. I’m ready for the challenge.

Reflecting further on the experience, Eala noted that she takes away positive memories from the multi-sport event. To be able to share the experience with the Filipino people was really important to her, emphasizing that she has no regrets about her campaign in Nagoya.
Motivation Toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Winning gold at the Asian Games carries direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, making the top podium spot a primary objective for competing athletes. Eala confirmed that competing in the Olympics remains her ultimate dream. Because direct qualification was tied to the gold medal she missed, she must now pursue other qualification pathways for the upcoming Games.
Given that alternative routes to the Olympics exist, I suppose that provides an additional push. Competing in the Olympics is definitely a dream of mine. So, if anything, I leave here more motivated.
