Alex Eala Triumphs in Japan: A Much-Needed Win After WTA Struggles

Alex Eala Triumphs in Japan: A Much-Needed Win After WTA Struggles

November 20, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Alex Eala Wins in Japan After Tough Tournament Stretch

Alex Eala, a talented 19-year-old tennis player from the Philippines, won her first match in over three weeks at the ITF W100 Takasaki International Open on November 19. Eala defeated local player Ena Koike, 17, with a score of 6-2, 6-0.

Eala’s recent performance in the WTA Tour was challenging, as she lost in the first round of four tournaments and in the qualifying round of another. She needed this victory to regain her confidence. Koike, ranked 529th in the world, struggled against Eala, who is seeded fifth in the $100,000 event.

Eala played efficiently, not losing her serve throughout the match and finishing in just over an hour. She dominated by only allowing Koike to score two games, with the second set ending in a quick 24 minutes.

Next, Eala will compete against 18-year-old Hayu Kinoshita in the round of 16 on November 22.

Eala’s recent losses have affected her world ranking. She is currently ranked 163rd and has fallen behind Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, who is now ranked 139th. If Eala wins her next match, she may face Sawangkaew in the quarterfinals, highlighting a potential showdown between the top players in Southeast Asia.
