Alex Jones, co-presenter of the BBC’s popular show The One Show, has revealed she was unaware of any complaints made against her former colleague Jermaine jenas. The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was removed from his presenting duties at both The One Show and BBC’s Match Of The Day, as well as his punditry roles and BBC Radio 5 Live, following allegations concerning workplace conduct.
Unforeseen Departure and Co-Presenter’s Ignorance
Jenas was dismissed from the BBC in August. Jones, 48, who shared the The One Show sofa with Jenas, told The Big Issue that she had no prior knowledge of the issues until after his departure. “I very much take people on face value,” Jones stated. “But with JJ [Jenas] I didn’t know what was going on. I had no idea. I thought he was taking extended leave.”
She further explained that the BBC did not disclose the details of the situation to her until the matter was resolved. “The BBC didn’t share with me what was going on until they actually dealt with it. And, you know, they did what they thought was right,” Jones commented. Reflecting on the situation from a parental perspective, she added, “If that was my daughter and she felt uncomfortable with someone’s behaviour, I hope that whatever company she was working for would deal with it swiftly as well.”
Jenas’s Response and Personal Life Changes
Following his sacking from the BBC, Jenas issued an apology, asserting that his actions were “nothing illegal” and that the “inappropriate messages” exchanged were ”between two consenting adults.”
Several months after his BBC exit, Jenas’s wife, Ellie Penfold, announced their separation after 16 years of marriage. In a statement shared on her Instagram story, Penfold expressed the difficulty of sharing such personal news but felt it was necessary given the circumstances. “After 16 years together and 4 marvelous children, Jermaine and I have decided to part ways,” she wrote. ”We will remain friends and continue to co-parent.”
A History of Co-Presenter Departures
This is not the first time Jones has experienced a co-presenter leaving the One Show. Jason Manford, who joined the program alongside Jones in August 2010, resigned just three months into his role. Manford’s departure stemmed from revelations that he had shared sexual internet messages with female fans. Despite the circumstances of his exit, Jones maintains a positive relationship with Manford, stating they are “still really good pals.”
Jenas has since returned to broadcasting, joining TalkSport radio in February. The radio station had previously distanced itself from him following his departure from the BBC.
