Amazon’s Alexa+ Gets AI overhaul for Enhanced User Experience
Amazon is rolling out a completely revamped version of its Alexa voice assistant, dubbed Alexa+, powered by large language models. Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s vice president of alexa and Echo, described the upgrade as a “complete rebuild of the architecture.”
The company employed artificial intelligence at every stage of Alexa+’s development, even using AI to generate portions of the code. According to Rausch, the use of AI tooling throughout the build process has been “staggering.”
The Alexa team also integrated generative AI into the testing phase. Engineers utilized a large language model to evaluate answers during reinforcement learning, allowing the AI to select the best responses from Alexa+ outputs.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy noted in a memo to employees that the increased efficiency from AI could lead to workforce reductions in some areas. “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” Jassy said. He anticipates a reduction in the total corporate workforce over the next few years due to AI-driven efficiency gains.
The new Alexa+ aims to provide a more conversational and personalized experience, remembering user preferences and completing online tasks such as searching for concert tickets or buying groceries. Rausch emphasized the importance of supporting hundreds of millions of devices during the rollout of the generative AI version of Alexa.
Amazon initially announced Alexa+ in february and began early access for a limited number of users in March. The company now reports that over a million people have access to the updated voice assistant, with a broader release planned for later this summer. This represents a small fraction of the potential user base, as hundreds of millions of Alexa users are expected to eventually gain access to the AI-powered tool.
Amazon faces stiff competition in the voice assistant arena. OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode, launched in 2024, gained popularity for its engaging AI voice. Apple also announced a important overhaul of Siri at its developer conference last year, incorporating contextual and personalization features similar to those being developed for Alexa+. However, Apple has yet to launch the rebuilt Siri, with an expected release sometime next year.
