Alfa Romeo has updated the Tonale compact SUV with styling revisions and mechanical enhancements aimed at improving its sporty character and meeting stringent Euro 6-bis emissions standards. the updates encompass engine modifications, suspension tweaks, and a refined plug-in hybrid system.
Engine Updates
The entry-level Tonale will now feature a more powerful 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Output has been increased by 15 brake horsepower (bhp) to 173 bhp, achieved through improvements to the mild-hybrid system. This enhancement aims to provide a more responsive driving experience.
The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant receives two power output options: 187 bhp and 266 bhp. notably, the higher output is slightly reduced from the current model’s 276 bhp. Alfa Romeo has not yet confirmed whether the electric range of the PHEV has been improved beyond the existing 38 miles. Though, a new computer system is implemented to ensure a smoother transition between petrol and electric power sources.
Suspension and Handling
The suspension has been recalibrated to enhance handling and ride comfort.Specific details regarding the suspension changes were not provided in the initial proclamation, but Alfa Romeo claims the adjustments contribute to a more engaging driving experience.
Euro 6-bis Compliance
Thes updates are largely driven by the need to comply with the Euro 6-bis emissions regulations, which are becoming increasingly strict in Europe. The revised engine range and hybrid system improvements are designed to meet these standards, ensuring the Tonale remains available in key markets.
Impact on Sales
Recent sales figures indicate a challenging market for Alfa Romeo. According to Autocar, sales of the Tonale and Giulia fell by 40% and 24% respectively. These updates are intended to revitalize interest in the Tonale and boost sales figures.
