President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria has been re-elected with a landslide victory, securing approximately 95% of the votes. According to reports from AFP and AP on September 9th, the Algerian Central Election Commission (ANIE) announced the results of the presidential election held on September 7th.
The election saw President Tebboune receive 5.34 million votes out of a total of 5.63 million votes cast. His closest competitors, Abdellah Ali Hassani Cherif, leader of the Social Movement for Peace, and Youssef Auchichi, secretary general of the center-left Socialist Front, secured about 3% and 2% of the votes, respectively.
President Tebboune was first elected in December 2019 with 58% of the vote, following the resignation of then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika amid nationwide protests. He announced his intention to run for re-election in March and moved the presidential election forward to September 7th.
Despite having the support of the military and the establishment, voter turnout was relatively low at 48%. The opposition camp, led by Cherif, has raised allegations of election fraud, as reported by Reuters.
President Tebboune’s re-election is seen as a significant development in Algerian politics, with the country facing various challenges in the coming years.
