The suspect, Jefferson Lewis, was apprehended at a residence in Alice Springs during the night of April 30, 2026. The arrest follows a search for Kumanjayi Little Baby, a five-year-old girl who had been reported missing from Old Timers Camp on the outskirts of the city.
Discovery of the Victim
The search for the child ended in tragedy when her body was discovered in bushland near Alice Springs. Police have since confirmed their belief that the child was murdered, and the case has transitioned into a homicide investigation.

Violence and Civil Unrest
Following the arrest of Jefferson Lewis, a significant crowd gathered outside the Alice Springs Hospital, where the suspect was taken for treatment. The gathering escalated into a riot involving more than 100 people.
Protesters reportedly shouted expletives, threw rocks, and caused damage to police vehicles while officers attempted to guard the medical facility. In response to the violence, police deployed tear gas and fired rubber bullets into the crowd to disperse the protesters and maintain security at the hospital.
