All England Open Badminton: Latest News & Updates 2024

March 7, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Birmingham, England – Lakshya Sen of India is one win away from claiming the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championship title, overcoming a grueling semi-final match against Canada’s Victor Lai on Saturday, March 7th. Sen battled through painful blisters and severe cramps to secure a 21-16, 18-21, 21-15 victory at the Utilita Arena Birmingham.

The win propels Sen into the final, where he will face Lin Chun-yi of Chinese Taipei on Sunday, March 8th. This will be Sen’s second appearance in the All England final, having finished as runner-up in 2022. The match against Lai lasted one hour and 37 minutes, a testament to the physical and mental endurance required from both players.

Sen’s victory carries significant weight for Indian badminton. Only two Indians have previously won the All England title: Prakash Padukone in 1980 and Pullela Gopichand in 2001. Prakash Nath reached the final in 1947, and Saina Nehwal was a runner-up in 2015, but a win for Sen would break a 25-year drought for India in this historic tournament.

The semi-final was a hard-fought contest. Sen demonstrated resilience and precise strokeplay despite his physical discomfort. The match featured a remarkable 86 shots, highlighting the extended rallies and defensive skills on display. Lai, who previously earned a bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships in Paris, proved a formidable opponent, taking the second game 18-21.

The All England Open, officially known as the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships, is the world’s oldest and most prestigious badminton tournament, dating back to 1899. The 2026 edition, a BWF World Tour Super 1000 event, boasts a total prize pool of US$1,300,000. The tournament began on Tuesday, March 3rd and concludes on Sunday, March 8th.

This year’s championships feature six days of world-class badminton action, with 155 matches played at the Utilita Arena Birmingham. The tournament is organized by Badminton England with sanction from the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Looking back at the 2024 edition, Jonatan Christie of Indonesia won the men’s singles title, while Carolina Marín of Spain claimed the women’s singles crown. Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia were victorious in men’s doubles, and Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee of South Korea triumphed in women’s doubles. Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China secured the mixed doubles title.

The point distribution for the tournament follows the BWF points system for Super 1000 events, with the winner receiving 12,000 points. Prize money is distributed according to BWF regulations, with the singles winner receiving $91,000 and the doubles winner receiving $96,200.

Sen’s path to the final has been marked by determination. Overcoming the physical challenges presented by blisters and cramps underscores his mental fortitude. His opponent, Lin Chun-yi, will present a new set of challenges. Lin is currently ranked 11th in the world and will be looking to claim his first All England Open title.

The final promises to be a captivating contest, with both players vying for badminton glory and a place in the tournament’s rich history. For Sen, the opportunity to join Padukone and Gopichand as an All England champion represents a career-defining moment, and a potential turning point for Indian badminton.
