Common Allergy Spray Shows Promise in Blocking COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses
A readily available over-the-counter nasal spray, azelastine, is showing important potential as a preventative measure against respiratory infections, including COVID-19. A recent clinical trial involving 450 participants demonstrated a remarkable reduction in SARS-cov-2 infections among those using the spray.
The study, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, divided participants into two groups.Over a 56-day period, 227 individuals used azelastine nasal spray three times daily, while the remaining 223 used a placebo spray with the same frequency. The results were striking: only 2.2% of the azelastine group contracted COVID-19, compared to 6.7% in the placebo group – a threefold difference. All infections were confirmed through rigorous PCR testing.
But the benefits didn’t stop there. Researchers observed fewer symptomatic COVID-19 cases and a lower overall incidence of all confirmed respiratory infections in the azelastine group. perhaps surprisingly, the spray also considerably reduced rhinovirus infections – the common cold – with just 1.8% of the treatment group contracting the virus versus 6.3% in the placebo group, mirroring the protection seen against SARS-CoV-2.
Azelastine has long been used to treat hay fever, and laboratory studies had previously hinted at its antiviral properties. This new research marks the first time a protective effect has been demonstrated in a real-world clinical setting.
While further research is needed, these findings suggest azelastine nasal spray could become a valuable tool in protecting vulnerable populations, particularly during periods of high infection rates or before travel. Researchers emphasize the need for larger, multi-center trials to explore its potential as an “on-demand” preventative treatment and to assess its effectiveness against a wider range of respiratory pathogens.
This collaborative effort involved researchers from multiple institutions, including the Department of Internal Medicine V at Saarland University medical Center, the Institute of Clinical Pharmacy, the Institute of Virology, and the pharmaceutical company URSAPHARM Arzneimittel GmbH, highlighting the power of partnerships between academia, industry, and public health initiatives.
