DRESDEN, Germany (AP) — The Bündnis 90/The greens faction in the Saxon state parliament announced tuesday its support for borrowing to fund the state’s 2025-26 budget. This decision aligns with proposed amendments to the budget draft, leveraging recent constitutional changes that permit state borrowing.
Greens Criticize Budget draft, Push for Sustainable investments
Franziska schubert, chair and financial spokeswoman for the greens in the Saxon state parliament, criticized the current budget proposal. She stated that the CDU and SPD lack a majority for the draft, calling it “the work of destruction.”
What Saxony needs now are sustainable investments: in climate adaptation,in social infrastructure,in modern governance and livable municipalities.
Schubert argued that the federal government has enabled borrowing for states for valid reasons, and the CDU’s stance on the issue appears “daring.”
Loans Seen as Key to Strengthening Public Services
The Greens believe that loans are essential for securing sustainable investments, bolstering public services, and addressing contemporary challenges. Schubert emphasized the potential consequences of not utilizing borrowing options.
Without this possibility, the Free State is permanently weakened – socially, ecological and economical.
She noted that the change in the Basic Law allows states to take out loans for necesary conversion and adaptation measures, a change the state government itself approved in the Federal Council.
Opposition to Current Budget Design
Schubert asserted that the current budget draft would harm the state and its citizens, weakening social structures and burdening municipalities with debt.
This draft budget does the opposite – it weakens our social structures, forces municipalities to debt and fail with central questions of the future.
She stated that the design is not acceptable in its current form and requires more than just cosmetic changes.
Negotiations Hinged on Borrowing
Schubert called for an approach to the democratic opposition, placing the onus on the “mini coalition.” The Greens have made their position clear: approval of the budget is contingent on the possibility of borrowing.
Without the possibility of borrowing, there will be no approval from us alliance green. The CDU has to move now. When we see movement here,we are negotiating.
