U.S. Did Not ⁣Launch⁣ Military action⁤ Against Iran despite Crackdown on Protests

the United States refrained from military intervention in Iran in late 2023, despite threats ‍from President Donald Trump ⁢and a violent crackdown by the Iranian⁢ government on widespread anti-government protests.

Reasons for U.S. Restraint

Several⁣ factors contributed to the‌ decision not to launch a military strike against Iran. Thes included concerns about potential retaliation against U.S. bases in the region⁤ and ⁢uncertainty regarding the impact of strikes on both protesters and⁤ the Iranian regime. The⁤ U.S. instead opted to‍ increase ⁣economic pressure through tariffs and additional sanctions.

Protest Crackdown ‍and Death Toll

Widespread anti-government unrest erupted in Iran, prompting a forceful response from the regime. Determining the exact number of casualties proved difficult due to an extensive internet blackout imposed by Iranian authorities. Though, multiple⁢ reports indicated ⁢a death toll reaching ⁤into the thousands. The protests began in September 2023 following the ⁢death ‌of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman⁣ who died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly violating ‌Iran’s strict dress code.

Economic Pressure

Alongside avoiding military action, the U.S. government increased economic ‍pressure on Iran.⁤ This included the implementation⁢ of additional tariffs⁢ and sanctions⁢ aimed at crippling the Iranian economy. On January 12, 2024,‍ the U.S. Treasury Department announced ‌sanctions⁣ targeting individuals involved in the suppression of protests and the censorship of internet access ‌in Iran. Potential‍ Iranian Retaliation

U.S. officials expressed concern that any military action would likely ‌trigger a retaliatory response from ⁢Iran. Potential‌ targets included ⁣U.S. ⁢military bases in the Middle East, ⁢as well as U.S. allies in the region. In December 2023, U.S. Central⁢ Command reported increased Iranian ‌naval activity in⁣ the Red ‌Sea, raising concerns about potential ‌disruptions to shipping lanes.U.S. Central⁤ Command Website
