Beyond the Scalp: Nail Changes
The inflammation associated with alopecia areata can sometimes extend to fingernails and toenails, particularly in cases of more significant hair loss. This can manifest as white spots, pitting, cracking, splitting, or thinning of the nails. Often, these nail changes are subtle and go unnoticed by both parents and children, requiring no treatment. Though, if the nail changes become bothersome or painful, treatments addressing the hair loss can also provide relief for the nails.
Treatment Options: What to Consider
“Alopecia areata isn’t medically hazardous, so treatment is not mandatory,” Dr. grossberg clarifies. Though, various treatments can accelerate hair regrowth. These include topical steroids, steroid injections, and oral minoxidil. For more severe cases, a doctor might recommend biologic medications or Janus kinase inhibitors, tailored to the child’s age and overall health.
It’s crucial to remember that these treatments aren’t cures, and hair loss may recur.The decision to pursue treatment should be made in collaboration with your child, considering the extent of hair loss, potential side effects, and the emotional impact of the condition.
