Residents of Jakarta, Indonesia, will have an opportunity to witness the peak of the Alpha Centaurid meteor shower tonight, February 8, 2026. The astronomical event has been active since January 28th and will continue through February 21st.

The meteor shower is best viewed under clear skies, away from significant light pollution, and requires no specialized equipment. Meteors will begin to appear around 9:54 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) as the Centaurus constellation rises in the eastern horizon. Observation can continue until just before dawn, around 5:32 AM WIB, with the period before sunrise offering the most favorable viewing conditions.

At its peak, observers can expect to see between 20 and 30 meteors per hour, characterized by their swift movement and distinct light trails. According to experts at Starwalk Space, the timing of this peak is particularly advantageous as it coincides with the waning third quarter moon phase.
