Alpine Confident in Doohan’s Abu Dhabi Debut Despite High Stakes
Alpine Team Principal otmar Szafnauer expressed confidence in rookie jack Doohan’s ability to handle the pressure of his Formula 1 debut at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The Australian driver is set to replace Esteban Ocon for the race, with Szafnauer stating that the decision was a mutual one that benefits both parties.
“I think it comes from all sides really,” Szafnauer said when asked about the catalyst for the driver change. “I guess you could say it’s good to get Jack in early, and I think you could say from Esteban’s side it’s good to move on early.”
ocon has been a key part of the Alpine team, but the move allows both driver and team to explore new opportunities.
Szafnauer acknowledged the challenge Doohan faces stepping into an F1 car for the first time at a crucial race, with Alpine locked in a tight battle for sixth place in the constructors’ championship against Haas and Alfa Romeo.
“I think anyone who gets thrown into an F1 car in a race like that, it’s never easy to judge,” szafnauer admitted.
He drew comparisons to the impressive debut of fellow Alpine Academy driver Oliver Bearman in Saudi Arabia and the pressure faced by Kimi Antonelli in Monza, highlighting the unique challenges each driver encounters.
However, Szafnauer remains optimistic about Doohan’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“I think Jack’s just got to take it as he finds it,” he said. “I think he’s professional enough to handle it.I think as well, once you ease into the weekend with FP1 and FP2, you can build up to it as well.”
