Arizona Man’s Mother Used in IED Test After Body Donation
Updated June 09, 2025
Jim Stauffer, of Arizona, donated his mother Doris’s body to science in 2013, hoping to contribute to Alzheimer’s research. Instead, he learned her remains were used in a roadside bomb experiment. The Biological Resource Center (BRC), a body broker company, arranged the donation.
Stauffer authorized medical research, but was horrified to discover Doris’s brain was never used for Alzheimer’s research. Instead, her body was part of an Army experiment measuring damage from roadside bombs. Internal records showed at least 20 other bodies were used in similar blast experiments without consent, violating Army policy. BRC sold donated bodies for $5,893 each, despite Stauffer specifically prohibiting such experiments.

Stauffer recounted the grim details: “She was strapped in a chair, and a detonation took place underneath her to get an idea of what the human body goes thru when a vehicle is hit by an IED.”
Army officials claimed they never received consent forms and relied on BRC’s assurances.BRC, which sold over 20,000 parts from about 5,000 bodies over a decade, is now defunct.Former owner Stephen Gore pleaded guilty to fraud in 2022 in connection with this body broker scandal.

Gore told Reuters he always tried to honor donor wishes and sent consent forms when requested. Stauffer disputes this, saying, “He didn’t care about the families, he didn’t care about the people.”
Stauffer learned about his mother’s fate from a reporter. His wife, Lisa, reassured him, “We did right. They just did not honor our wishes.”
