Funding Breakdown and Research Focus
The €5 million will be distributed among researchers at different career stages. Thirteen established researchers will receive grants of €300,000 each over a three-year research period. Emanuela Pasciuto from the University of Antwerp was awarded an extra €50,000 as the winner of the Young Researcher Award. Ten projects led by young researchers will receive €110,000 each for a two-year research period.
The projects selected underwent a thorough international evaluation process by independent experts and Stopalzheimer’s Scientific Advisory Board. The jury assessed each proposal based on its scientific quality and potential impact on patients and their loved ones.
Leuven as a Center for Dementia Research
A significant portion of the funded projects will be conducted at KU Leuven and VIB-KU Leuven, reinforcing Leuven’s position as a leading international center for dementia research. One project, led by Prof. Koen Van Laere of KU Leuven, will utilize ultra-high-resolution PET scans to visualize the earliest brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. This approach aims to improve early detection, a critical factor in managing the disease and potentially slowing its progression.
Broader Research Landscape
This substantial investment by Stopalzheimer occurs alongside other significant funding initiatives. The Flemish government is investing €16.5 million in a large-scale study on Alzheimer’s disease, also focused on earlier detection. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Part the Cloud initiative, announced on , has granted $5 million to four studies exploring gene targeting treatments for Alzheimer’s. This funding program, started by philanthropist Michaela “Mikey” Hoag, emphasizes a rigorous review process and encourages further investment in innovative trials. To date, Part the Cloud-funded studies have attracted over $1.6 billion in follow-on funding.
The Part the Cloud initiative focuses on gene targeting therapies, which aim to modify gene expression to combat Alzheimer’s. Researchers are investigating over 100 genes associated with risk for or resistance to the disease, opening avenues for personalized gene editing and gene-related therapies. This approach recognizes the growing consensus that effective Alzheimer’s treatment and prevention may require a combination of interventions targeting different aspects of the disease.
Remynd’s Drug Development
Leuven biotech company Remynd is also contributing to the fight against Alzheimer’s, currently testing an improved drug that offers potential benefits for patients at both early and advanced stages of the disease.
