[City, State] – A groundbreaking study has revealed a potential new tool in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease: a simple, three-minute brainwave test called fastball. This non-invasive test, utilizing electroencephalography (EEG), shows promise in detecting memory problems associated with Alzheimer’s long before customary diagnostic methods can identify the condition.
Developed by Dr. George Stothart, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Bath, the Fastball test analyzes the brain’s automatic responses to images. Small sensors placed on the scalp record electrical activity while a person watches a stream of images on a screen. They were not instructed to memorize the images. subsequently, participants watched hundreds of images flash on a screen, with each image appearing for only a third of a second.Every fifth image was one of the eight previously shown.
The study revealed that individuals with amnestic MCI, a type of MCI that primarily affects memory for objects, exhibited reduced brainwave responses to the repeated images compared to healthy adults and those with non-amnestic MCI. Notably, individuals with amnestic MCI are at a significantly higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
While the Fastball test cannot definitively predict who will develop Alzheimer’s,it offers a crucial opportunity for early risk assessment. If confirmed by larger studies, this test could help doctors identify patients who are most likely to benefit from emerging Alzheimer’s drugs like donanemab and lecanemab, which have shown greater effectiveness when administered in the early stages of the disease.
Importantly, all tests were conducted in the participants’ homes, a deliberate choice to enhance accessibility and minimize anxiety. This approach underscores the commitment to patient-centered care and ease of use.
The findings, published in the journal Brain Communications, have been met with cautious optimism by experts in the field.
Prof.vladimir Litvak, of UCL’s Queen Square Institute of Neurology, calls it “an early step towards developing a clinically useful test.” He emphasizes the importance of future research to determine the test’s ability to predict disease progression and inform treatment decisions.
