Amaarae is preparing to release her third album, “Black Star,” later this year, delving into her identity as a woman and artist. The musician, whose real name is Ama Genfi, finds power in vulnerability. The album title is a triple reference to herself, the ghanaian flag, and the Black cultural roots of the dance music she incorporates.

The 30-year-old says that tapping into a sensitive side ⁣gives her confidence. “There’s a switch that flips,” Amaarae said. “There’s ‍a confidence and big-dick energy to it. It’s a version of me that takes over.”

Amaarae said she wanted to have fun with “Black Star.” She and her producer, Kyu steed, traveled to Brazil to collaborate with baile-funk producers and also worked with El Guincho and Bnyx. The‍ goal was to create music ‍for expression, not just for⁤ hits. “I wanted to feel free like that,” she said.

Breaking Through

Amaarae is moving⁤ past difficult moments that inspired “Fountain baby.”⁢ She described that period as “hell on Earth” and said the music from that time equipped her with knowledge to navigate the world.

Collaboration was approached with a⁢ new mindset, influenced by her experience on Childish Gambino‘s “Call Stone” album. She said Donald Glover was masterful at pulling engaging performances out of her. “Now, when I bring other people into⁢ my world, I’m‌ more⁢ intentional. They all have to operate as characters in ⁣this world,” Amaarae said.

The first‍ single, “S.M.O.” (Slut Me Out), ⁢features a retro-futuristic dance vibe.⁣ Another track, “Star Killa,” includes bold lyrics that some have questioned. “It’s bold and audacious,” she ⁢said.⁤ “I ‍think it’s just nice sometimes to say⁣ the thing⁣ as it‌ is indeed.”

Amaarae’s goal with “Black Star” is “global takeover.” She added, “My soul can’t rest until I feel like I’ve⁢ made a project that resonates in a really huge ⁢way globally. The last frontier is to make both a ⁣commercial and critical success.”

“Above all,” she said, “I’m a Black fucking star.”

Aaron Christmon and Marquise ⁣Miller handled styling, Maykisha Bowers did hair, and Giant⁤ Chaos did makeup. Reid Calvert⁢ assisted with photography,‍ and Deonna the ball assisted with styling.Balenciaga ⁢provided the ⁣outfit.
