An incoming El Niño phenomenon projected for December and January is setting up a distinct agricultural season, bringing strong water reserves across the region just as early corn and first-crop soybeans enter their critical yield-determination months. Planting operations are already underway for the 2026/27 coarse crop cycle. Sunflower has reached over 26% of its projected 3-million-hectare area, while corn is advancing across 11% of 8.4 million hectares, according to figures outlined by the plant nutrition firm Amauta.
El Niño Forecast Sets Stage for South American Harvest
Water and Genetics Clear the Path for Yields
While water availability and market prices are currently favourable, commercial director Joel Suvirada notes that crop nutrition remains the primary variable left for growers to manage lot by lot. Agronomic priorities traditionally dictate that water must be resolved first, followed by genetics and then nutrition. With water secured by the forecast and modern genetics well-established through a decade of continuous improvement, performance now depends heavily on targeted nutritional applications.
Targeted Protocols Drive Corn and Soybean Trials
To capture this potential under strong El Niño conditions, Amauta has structured its product portfolio around crop-specific strategies that pair microgranulated starter fertilizers with foliar adjustments and bio-stimulants during peak demand stages. For corn, the Sabio Maíz program starts with Micro+ Plus and Micro+ 10-40 microgranulated treatments, which field trials indicate yield 420 kilograms per hectare more than traditional methods. The protocol adds Wayra Ziman to correct zinc and manganese deficiencies, Wayra Nitro and Wayra Nitro S for nitrogen, and Wayra Cuaje during grain formation.
Expanding Nutrition Across Sunflower and Soy Production
The soybean portfolio, marketed as Sabia Soja, utilizes the Micro+ line alongside Wayra Ziman and the amino-acid-concentrated bio-stimulant Wayra Amino. Trials recorded a 300-kilogram-per-hectare advantage over traditional approaches from the starter microgranules, with subsequent applications covering reproductive stages and grain filling through Wayra K and Bio Amino Plus. A parallel structure is applied to sunflowers under the Sabio Girasol framework, supporting flowering and head development.
Economic Pressures Transform Input Decisions
Economic pressures have simultaneously shifted how producers evaluate these inputs, transforming fertilization from a flexible cost line into a measured investment. Instead of relying on historical financial tools like purchasing inputs in pesos while anticipating devaluations, shrinking margins mean growers now measure returns directly in extra kilograms harvested per dollar spent. This evolving operational framework places physical crop performance front and centre as the upcoming summer season develops.
