Amazon is reducing its workforce in the books division, impacting employees at Goodreads and Kindle, as the company seeks to improve efficiency. The move follows a wave of tech job cuts affecting over 62,000 workers this year, according to Layoffs.fyi.
A senior Amazon manager informed affected employees via email that their roles were being eliminated.The email stated that impacted employees woudl receive full pay and benefits for 60 days,or 90 days for those in New York and New Jersey,along with severance.
The job cuts, which affected fewer than 100 employees, are part of Amazon’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations. Amazon acquired Goodreads in 2013 for $150 million.
“As part of our ongoing work to make our teams and programs operate more efficiently, and to better align with our business roadmap, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles within the Books organization,” an Amazon spokesperson said.
Amazon started as an online bookstore in the early 1990s and now generates about $28 billion annually from global book sales. The company offers more than 20 million titles in the U.S. alone and controls a meaningful portion of the U.S. book market.
Since 2022, Amazon has cut approximately 27,000 employees to reduce costs. recent cuts include 100 jobs in the devices and services department and dozens in communications and sustainability.
