Amazon Cancels Dublin Plant, 500 Jobs Over Electricity Issues
Amazon Halts €22bn Irish Investment Amidst power Supply Woes
Dublin Data Center Project Stalled Due to Network Constraints
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been forced to halt plans for a significant new facility in Dublin, citing issues with power supply from ESB Networks. The project, which had secured planning permission for a 23,600 square meter site in 2022 with state backing, was brought to a standstill when ESB Networks indicated that power could not be supplied within the proposed timeframe due to existing network constraints in the area.
Disappointment and Future Prospects
“AWS was disappointed that it did not prove possible to proceed with this project,” an amazon spokesperson told The Irish Times. “If conditions allow, we do hope to be able to make othre high-tech investments elsewhere in Ireland.” This statement highlights the company’s continued interest in the Irish market, despite this particular setback.
ESB Networks confirmed that discussions with Amazon regarding the connection for the facility were ongoing.they clarified that the project was intended as a “server recycling plant, not a data centre,” and that they were “still actively working on this with the developer up untill the decision was taken not to proceed in Dublin.”
Amazon has a significant investment portfolio in ireland, totalling €22 billion, and provides employment for approximately 6,500 individuals across its operations in Dublin, Drogheda, and Cork. The decision to pause this Dublin project underscores the critical importance of robust and scalable energy infrastructure for the continued growth of the tech sector in Ireland.
