Amazon Fire TV Sticks: Expiration Dates, Gigabit Ethernet, New Models & the End of Android as Vega OS Takes Over

Amazon is phasing out Android-based Fire TV Sticks in favor of its new Vega OS platform, marking a significant shift in the company’s streaming device strategy. The change, confirmed through updates to Amazon’s developer documentation and recent product launches, means that all future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega OS instead of the Android-derived Fire OS that has powered the devices for over a decade.

The transition began with the release of the Fire TV Stick 4K Select in September 2025, which debuted Vega OS as its operating system. According to Amazon’s updated Fire TV developer page, the shift applies to all models starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, effectively ending Android-based Fire TV Stick production. This was later confirmed by Amazon in April 2026, when the company announced that the new Fire TV Stick HD would also run Vega OS, solidifying the platform as the future of its streaming stick lineup.

Vega OS is a Linux-based platform designed to be functionally identical to Fire OS in user interface and experience, but with key differences in app compatibility. Unlike Fire OS, which allowed users to sideload third-party Android applications through methods like enabling developer options and using tools such as Downloader, Vega OS restricts installations to apps available exclusively in the Amazon Appstore. Amazon cites enhanced security and anti-piracy measures as the primary reasons for this limitation, noting that the company has been cracking down on unauthorized app usage on its Android-based devices.

The change affects current high-end models such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which remain the last Android-based Fire TV Sticks available that support sideloading. While these models continue to receive software updates and are expected to remain functional for several years, no new Android-based Fire TV Sticks will be released moving forward. Amazon has indicated that future hardware revisions will exclusively feature Vega OS, meaning users seeking the ability to install apps outside the Amazon Appstore will need to look to alternative platforms such as Google TV devices.

Despite the restrictions, Amazon maintains that core streaming services including Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, Apple TV+, and others will continue to be supported on Vega OS. The company also plans to expand compatibility with Xbox Cloud Gaming, Luna, and Alexa+ in the near future, although these services are already available on existing Android-based Fire TV devices. Performance improvements are another stated benefit of Vega OS, with Amazon describing it as “remarkably fast” and highly efficient, particularly on lower-end hardware such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which features just 1GB of RAM.

The shift to Vega OS aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy of exerting greater control over its ecosystem, reducing reliance on Google’s Android platform, and minimizing opportunities for piracy and unauthorized modifications. While the change may limit flexibility for advanced users who rely on sideloading for custom apps or utilities, it ensures a more uniform and secure experience for the majority of consumers who use Fire TV Sticks primarily for mainstream streaming services.

As of April 2026, the Fire TV Stick HD and Fire TV Stick 4K Select represent the current generation of Vega OS-powered devices, while the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and 4K Max remain available as the final Android-based options. Amazon has not announced an end-of-life date for existing Fire OS models, but industry observers note that the company’s focus has clearly shifted to Vega OS for all future development and hardware releases.
