Updated June 16,2025

Amazon is revamping its Amazon Health Services (AHS) division following the exit of ⁣several top‍ executives and inconsistent performance across its various healthcare initiatives. The healthcare restructuring, completed in May, seeks to simplify the association, according to Neil Lindsay, AHS⁢ senior‍ vice president, and a company spokesperson.

The e-commerce giant ⁣entered the ⁤healthcare sector about a decade ago. ⁤Since ⁣than, Amazon has developed ⁢a range of services, including online marketplaces for telehealth, chronic condition management, pharmacy services, and a national physician network through its acquisition of One Medical⁤ in 2023.

Not all ventures have succeeded. Amazon shuttered Amazon Care, its hybrid virtual and in-person care business, in⁤ 2022. Haven, a joint venture with Berkshire Hathaway and J.P.Morgan intended to lower employer healthcare ⁢costs, closed the prior year. Both initiatives struggled to gain traction and faced unexpected hurdles.

Recently, Amazon has emphasized the positive momentum⁣ in ⁤its healthcare division. ⁣While⁤ AHS⁢ financials are not public, the ⁢company has focused on growth. This includes opening new One Medical offices in states such as New Jersey, New York, and Ohio.Amazon also cites strong adoption of⁢ its pharmacy ⁤services, ⁤driven by investments ⁢in same-day medication delivery and caregiver ⁣prescription management.

The six new units created within AHS are led by existing Amazon executives, some of whom joined through the $3.9 billion One Medical acquisition.

“These updates reflect a broader strategy to‍ better deliver for patients and accelerate innovation across the business. We’re excited about the continued momentum across Amazon Health ⁢services, and remain deeply ⁤committed to our mission‍ of making healthcare easier,” Lindsay saeid.

A ⁣spokesperson stated that‍ the healthcare restructuring did not involve widespread ‍layoffs. However, Amazon eliminated hundreds⁣ of positions across ⁤Amazon Pharmacy and ‍One Medical last year.

Ann Allen, One Medical’s⁣ chief operating officer, will transition to a new role overseeing Amazon’s partnerships with health systems. Amazon intends to fill Allen’s previous position.

The reorganization follows the departure of One Medical CEO Trent Green, who left three months prior⁤ to lead a healthcare analytics firm. Dr. Vin Gupta, amazon Pharmacy’s chief medical ‍officer, also departed in February. aaron Martin, Amazon’s vice president of healthcare, and Dr. Sunita Mishra, Amazon’s chief medical officer, ‍also left in May.

What’s next

Amazon’s future strategy for its restructured health services division will likely focus on integrating its various offerings⁣ and demonstrating improved financial performance. the company will need to⁤ show that its investments in One⁢ Medical and other ⁤healthcare initiatives are yielding positive results.
