Amazon’s Irish subsidiary has reported narrowed losses for 2024, a year marked by a strategic focus on contract research and development within the broader Amazon and Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystem. Despite a 5% decline in turnover to €250.7 million, the company’s financial performance shows a reduction in losses to just under €23 million, down from €33.4 million in the previous year. This financial recalibration occurred as the company’s administrative expenses also saw a decrease, falling to €275 million from €297 million.
Financial Performance and Strategic Dependence
The tech giant’s Irish entity, which has been operating in the country for over two decades, closed the year with accumulated losses of nearly €100 million, an increase from €77 million at the end of 2023. however, its net assets saw a positive trend, rising to €120 million from €95 million in the prior financial period. the company’s accounts explicitly state its dependence on the “continued success of the Amazon.com group of companies,” underscoring its role as a supporting entity within the global Amazon structure.
A significant portion of employee remuneration over the past two years has been in the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). These awards grant employees the right to receive Amazon shares on a one-for-one basis once they meet specific vesting conditions, typically requiring between two and five years of service.Crucially, any unvested stock is forfeited if employees do not fulfill these service terms, a common practise in the tech industry to incentivize long-term commitment.
AWS Ireland Drives Revenue Growth
In stark contrast to the subsidiary’s overall financial performance, Amazon Data Services Ireland (ADSIL) Ltd, the company’s web services arm, experienced considerable growth. Revenues at ADSIL surged by €1 billion to €7.09 billion in the 12 months ending December 2024. This impressive revenue increase was accompanied by a 23% rise in pretax profit, which climbed from €15.16 million to €22.96 million, highlighting the robust performance of AWS operations in Ireland.
Corporate Tax and Going Concern
Despite reporting a net loss, the Irish Amazon entity paid over €1 million in Irish corporation tax for 2024. This tax payment was attributed to an adjustment related to share-based payments, demonstrating compliance with local tax regulations even during a period of financial deficit. The company’s immediate parent is listed as Amazon.com Sales Inc, based in Seattle.
A critical “going-concern” note within the accounts reassures stakeholders, stating that Amazon.com possesses ”sufficient financial resources” to support the Irish company. This backing is vital for the subsidiary’s continued operations and strategic development.
Employment and Operations in Ireland
Amazon employs a significant workforce of 6,500 individuals across Ireland, with operations spanning Cork, dublin, and Drogheda. These roles encompass data centres, Amazon Web Services, and a fulfilment center in Dublin, covering diverse functions such as data engineering, operations management, and finance. The company has maintained a presence in Ireland for over two decades, contributing to the local economy and technology sector.
Amazon did not provide comment on the filed accounts when approached by media. The company’s ongoing investment in Ireland, notably through its AWS division, signals a continued strategic commitment to the region, even as its research and development arm navigates a path towards profitability.
