Cape Canaveral, Fla. - United Launch alliance (ULA) successfully launched 27 broadband internet satellites for amazon’s Project Kuiper on Monday, marking the second such launch in two months. The mission bolsters Amazon’s role in expanding broadband internet access.
An Atlas V rocket, similar to the one used on April 28, lifted off from Cape Canaveral at 6:54 a.m. EDT, placing the satellites into thier designated orbit approximately 280 miles above Earth. This launch represents another step toward realizing Amazon’s vision of a network rivaling SpaceX’s Starlink.
The launch, initially scheduled earlier, faced a week-long delay due to an issue with the rocket’s RD-180 main engine, manufactured in Russia. After resolving the problem, the ULA launch team proceeded with the sunrise liftoff.
Boosted by five solid-fueled boosters, the atlas V ascended from the launch pad, heading northeast over the Atlantic. Within five minutes, the rocket jettisoned its boosters, payload fairing, and first stage. The Centaur upper stage then ignited, completing the task of positioning the 27 Kuiper satellites into orbit.
Amazon and ULA confirmed the mission’s success,bringing the total number of operational Kuiper satellites in orbit to 54.
A long way to go
With this launch, Project Kuiper has completed three launches, including a 2023 test launch of two prototype satellites. The completed network will consist of 3,232 satellites in low-Earth orbit, providing broadband internet coverage to a large portion of the world.
Amazon has contracted with four companies for over 80 launches to deploy its satellite constellation. ULA secured the majority of these contracts, responsible for launching more than half of the Kuiper satellites. Amazon purchased ULA’s last nine Atlas V rockets and later contracted for 38 Vulcan flights, each capable of delivering 45 Kuiper satellites.
