Amazon.com Inc. has signed long-term agreements to purchase electricity from four wind farms in Sweden, adding nearly 200 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to support its expanding digital infrastructure in the Nordic country, according to reporting by Bloomberg. The newly contracted power supply pushes Amazon’s total contracted capacity in Sweden past 1 gigawatt once the projects become fully operational, according to company statements cited by Bloomberg and Energy Connects. The e-commerce and cloud computing giant relies heavily on fossil-free energy to run its European data center network, positioning Sweden as a cornerstone of its regional sustainability and expansion strategy.
Developers and Project Locations
The four wind farms involved in the procurement deals are developed by Swedish renewable energy firms Eolus AB and OX2 AB, with OX2 owned by private equity firm EQT AB, according to Energy Connects and Econotimes. Three of the wind farms—Boarp, Dållebo, and Fågelås—are already operational, while the largest facility, Fageråsen, remains under construction. Sweden’s cool climate and abundant renewable electricity grid make the country an attractive hub for data center operations. Amazon currently maintains data center facilities in Eskilstuna, Katrineholm, and Västerås, and the company stated that capacity will increase across all three locations to match growing digital demand, as reported by Bloomberg.
Data Centers and Surging Power Demand
Major technology companies are accelerating their power purchase agreements as cloud computing and artificial intelligence workloads drive up electricity consumption. Data centers require continuous power supplies for servers, networking gear, and complex cooling systems. To meet this surging operational requirement, Amazon plans to add another 2 million Nvidia graphics processing units to its global data center fleet between 2027 and 2028, supplementing 1 million units slated for installation beginning in 2025, according to Energy Connects. In 2025, Amazon ranked as the largest corporate buyer of fossil-free energy in Sweden. Across Europe, the company reports investments in more than 260 projects delivering over 10 gigawatts of carbon-free energy capacity, part of a global portfolio exceeding 40 gigawatts across more than 700 projects.
