Updated June 16, 2025

Music⁤ supervisors jen Malone and Whitney Weisberg played a ‌crucial role in shaping the soundscape of Overcompensating, a comedy series created by Benito Skinner. The series follows Benny, a former football star, and Carmen, an outsider, as they navigate college life.

Malone ‌and Weisberg aimed to create an authentic atmosphere through their music choices, emphasizing the importance of selecting songs that resonated with the characters and storylines. The show stars skinner,⁢ wally Baram, Mary⁢ Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco, and Rish Shah, with recurring roles for several others.

One notable instance was the use of Surfer Blood in⁣ a bar scene.Weisberg said the‌ goal was to avoid generic background music and instead create a hometown vibe that enhanced the emotional connection‍ between Carmen and Grace, as well as Benny’s internal ⁢struggles.

Charli XCX’s music also features prominently throughout the series. Malone noted that securing The Edge of Glory ‌by Lady Gaga was a significant ⁢achievement. Weisberg added that Charli XCX’s ⁤songs were not just randomly selected but ‍were‍ integral to Benny’s story, reflecting his real-life experiences.

Regarding charli XCX’s involvement, Malone clarified that while her input was valued, she wasn’t directly involved in securing music rights. The focus was on allowing talent ⁣to contribute creatively without ⁣needless⁤ intervention.

When asked about ⁣their favorite ⁤song⁢ placements, both supervisors highlighted the use ‍of claws by Charli XCX ⁢at⁤ the end of episode five. Weisberg noted that the⁤ placement was unexpected and resulted from a collaborative effort⁣ between the editors, Benny⁢ Skinner, and Charli XCX herself.

Weisberg also praised the inclusion of sleigh Bells’ Crown on the Ground in episode eight, which she felt perfectly underscored the cliffhanger ending. Malone expressed her⁢ appreciation for including Pop the Glock by Uffie, an artist who influenced Charli XCX.

Weisberg said, “It⁤ was vital to make that bar‌ music what it needed to be…We really wanted it to have a feeling of a hometown vibe.”

Malone said, “The Edge‍ of ‍Glory ⁤ was a good get and something that was very‍ reasonable.”
