Amazon Takes the Wheel for James Bond Franchise
Well-known British agent James Bond—often referred to by his 007 agent codename—will soon have his dangerous missions guided by the technological prowess of Amazon. Amazon MGM Studios has finalized an agreement with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the British-American film producer heirs to the legendary Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, and creatively controlling ownership of 007.
In a statement to the press, Amazon confirmed that the financial terms of the agreement would not be disclosed. However, the company clarified that a joint venture has been established with Wilson and Broccoli, allowing the e-commerce and entertainment giant to manage the intellectual property of James Bond. Amazon’s “creative check” ensures unilaterally approved production agendas for new movies, potentially revitalizing the franchise’s long-dormant production schedule.
“We have created a joint venture that will manage the intellectual property of James Bond, and Amazon will take over ‘creative control’ of the property.” The agency said.
After over 60 years, 25 films, and six actors taking up the iconic role of James Bond, the franchise will see its most significant change yet. The series has traditionally been a closely guarded family affair, renowned not just for its cinematic excellence but also for a deep sense of continuity followed for generations. This historical transition underscores Amazon’s ambitions to inject fresh vibrancy into the series, integrating cutting-edge technology and consumer-friendly production values.
In related interviews, Michael Wilson, an eighty-eight-year-old veteran in the film industry and fervent advocate of the arts, stated, “I want to enjoy the intellectual challenges the arts provide. His half-sister Broccoli, sixty-four, a formidable force in the film industry, shared,
“I think it’s time to do other things.”

Nevertheless, Amazon’s acquisition in 2021 of MGM for $8.45 billion further entrenched their James Bond aspirations. This acquisition added over 4,000 films and 17,000 television series to its catalog, alongside key distribution rights of Bond films. In this parry, Amazon’s ability to debut fresh Bond films could signal an end to the production hiatus, reviving the James Bond cinematic legacy.

While some argue that Amazon’s involvement may threaten the franchise’s traditional charm and risks, this perspective overlooks the tech giant’s expansive platform and potential for innovative storytelling. Amazon has already shown that it can manage high-regional brand identity, demonstrated through massive streamlining productions such as Lord of the Rings.
Looking ahead, the Bond franchise is positioning itself for a transformative leap under Amazon’s stewardship. As the world’s leading entertainment conglomerate, Amazon has the unique capability to spearhead Bond-related content globally, leveraging its worldwide reach and expertise in digital streaming.
Eleventh film in the series, “James Bond: No Time to Die” streamed with first-class sell-through tickets for more than $1.1 billion.
“Together, Wilson and Broccoli have built one of the most successful franchises in the history of cinematography, which earned more than $ 7.8 billion worldwide. The most successful Bond film is the 2012 Skyfall and continues to improve.”
